Peebles, town, Scotland

Peebles (pē`bəlz), town (1991 pop. 6,750), Scottish Borders, S Scotland, at the confluence of Eddleston Water and the Tweed River. It is a mountain resort and a farm market with woolen mills. Ruins of a 13th-century church and castle remain.

It was a fairly built burgh, the houses of good stone, many slated; the town-hall not so fine, I thought, as that of Peebles, nor yet the street so noble; but take it altogether, it put me to shame for my foul tatters.
They announced that they were bound for Peebles, and drove in that direction till they were clear of the last houses of the town; then, extinguishing the lamps, returned upon their course, and followed a by-road toward Glencorse.
