Halonen, Pekka
Born Sept. 3, 1865, in Lapinlahti, Kuopio Province; died Dec. 1, 1933, in Tuusula, near Helsinki. Finnish painter. From 1886 to 1890, Halonen studied at the School of Drawing of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists, in Helsingfors. He studied at the Académie Julien in Paris in 1891 and 1892 and with P. Gauguin in 1894. Halonen’s paintings, which capture the virile poetry of peasant labor, are distinguished by their clarity of composition, succinct imagery, and patches of saturated local color. Halonen’s major works include The Reaper (1891), The Meal (1899), and Returning From Work (1905), all of which are in the Ateneum in Helsinki. REFERENCESPekka Halonen. Porvoo, 1947.Lindström, A.
