Pelageia Kochina

Kochina, Pelageia Iakovlevna 

(also P. la. Polubarinova-Kochina). Born May 1 (13), 1899, in Astrakhan. Soviet scientist in the field of hydrodynamics. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958; corresponding member, 1946). Hero of Socialist Labor (1969).

In 1921, Kochina graduated from Petrograd University. She had begun work in 1919 in the Main Geophysical Observatory. Kochina taught in Leningrad at the Institute of Transportation from 1925 to 1931 and at the Institute of Civil Aviation Engineering from 1931 to 1935. She was appointed professor at Leningrad University in 1934. In 1935 she began working at the Institute of Mathematics, in 1939 at the Institute of Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1959 at the Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Since 1971 she has been at the Institute of Problems of Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Kochina’s major works are on the theory of filtration, dynamic meteorology, and the theory of tidal flow in basins. She solved many problems in the movement of groundwater and of crude oil in porous media. Kochina edited the first collected works of S. V. Kovalevskaia. She was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 as well as four Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
