Pelton, Lester Allen (1829–1918) inventor, engineer; born in Vermillion, Ohio. During the California gold rush (1849), Pelton devised an improved undershot waterwheel powered by a jet of water striking pairs of hemispherical cups. Adaptations of Pelton wheels were used in the generation of hydroelectric power.
