On northeastern border of WA; organized Mar 1, 1911 from Stevens County. Name Origin: For the Pend Oreille River, which runs through the county, or for the name given to the Kalispel Indians by French-Canadian traders; from the French meaning 'pendant ears' because the Indians wore ear ornaments that probably lengthened their lobes
