Name Origin: For the Pend Oreille River, which runs through the county, or for the name given to the Kalispel Indians by French-Canadian traders; from the French meaning 'pendant ears' because the Indians wore ear ornaments that probably lengthened their lobes. Area (sq mi): 1425.32 (land 1400.27; water 25.05). Pop per sq mi: 9.10. Pop 2005: 12,673. State rank: 33. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.00%; 1990-2000 31.60%. Pop 2000: 11,732 (White 92.20%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 2.10%; Asian 0.60%; Other 5.70%). Foreign born: 2.00%. Median age: 41.90.
