Penetanguishene (pĕn'ətăng'gəshēn`, –gwəshēn`), town (1991 pop. 6,643), S Ont., Canada, on Georgian Bay. The name is a Native American word for "white rolling sands." Settled under the French regime, it has many French-speaking inhabitants. The town is a port and tourist center with manufactures such as fiberglass boats and auto parts. It became a naval post in 1793 and had a role in the War of 1812. The hulls of the captured American vessels Tecumseh and Tigris are in the museum. |
