penetration depth [‚pen·ə′trā·shən ‚depth] (cryogenics) The depth beneath the surface of superconductor in a magnetic field at which the magnetic field strength has fallen to 1/eof its value at the surface. (electricity) In induction heating, the thickness of a layer, extending inward from a conductor's surface, whose resistance to direct current equals the resistance of the whole conductor to alternating current of a given frequency. (engineering) The greatest depth in an ultrasonic test piece at which indications can be measured. How to thank TFD for its existence? The acceleration voltage is the potential difference between cathode and anode of the accelerator expressed usually in kV or MV, and determines, as mentioned already, the penetration depth of the beam. The main questions surrounding this work are how often to apply the solution, how to measure the penetration depth and how to evaluate the mitigation results and determine when it is too early or too late for an application to be cost effective. The output of these hardness testers is typically a single indentation hardness value that is a measure of the relative penetration depth of the indentation tip into the sample. |
