In east-central ME; organized Feb 15, 1816 (prior to statehood) from Hancock County. Name Origin: For the Penobscot River, which flows through the county; from an Indian word penobskeag 'rocky place' or 'river of rocks.'

Area (sq mi): 3556.14 (land 3395.73; water 160.41). Pop per sq mi: 43.30.
Pop 2005: 147,068. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.50%; 1990-2000 -1.10%. Pop 2000: 144,919 (White 96.20%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.70%; Other 2.20%). Foreign born: 2.50%. Median age: 37.20.
Income 2000: per capita $17,801; median household $34,274; Pop below poverty level: 13.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,622-$26,780.
Unemployment 2004: 5.40%. Change from 2000: 1.30%. Median travel time to work: 20.70 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 8.50%.
