On central western border of WI, southeast of Saint Paul, MN; organized Feb 25, 1858 from Chippewa County. Name Origin: For Pepin Lake, a widening of the Mississippi River. Named before 1700 by French explorers either for a member of the Duluth expedition, or for the French king, Pepin le Bref (715-768), the father of Charlemagne (742-814).
