Name Origin: For Pepin Lake, a widening of the Mississippi River. Named before 1700 by French explorers either for a member of the Duluth expedition, or for the French king, Pepin le Bref (715-768), the father of Charlemagne (742-814). Area (sq mi): 248.68 (land 232.28; water 16.40). Pop per sq mi: 31.80. Pop 2005: 7,380. State rank: 69. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.30%; 1990-2000 1.50%. Pop 2000: 7,213 (White 98.70%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.30%; Asian 0.20%; Other 0.80%). Foreign born: 0.60%. Median age: 38.70.
