Pepper, George Wharton

Pepper, George Wharton, 1867–1961, American jurist, b. Philadelphia. He practiced law in Philadelphia and was (1893–1910) professor of law at the Univ. of Pennsylvania. Pepper was appointed in 1922 to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Boies Penrose Penrose, Boies , 1860–1921, American political leader, b. Philadelphia. A lawyer, he was (1884–97) a member of the Pennsylvania legislature and coauthored a scholarly work, The City Government of Philadelphia (1887).

, and, elected on the Republican ticket later the same year, he served in the Senate until 1927. He wrote many books on law and was also the author of In the Senate (1930) and Family Quarrels (1931).

Pepper, George Wharton (1867–1961) U.S. senator, lawyer; born in Philadelphia, Pa. After practicing, teaching, and writing about the law, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate (Rep., Pa.; 1922–27). He wrote the U.S. Code, a codification of all statutes passed by Congress. Later he would argue several important cases before the Supreme Court involving the constitutionality of New Deal legislation.
