| When the researchers introduced molecules presumed to dock at the location where peptide bonds form, they confirmed that the site lies at one end of a tunnel structure previously proposed to reside within the ribosome. These subunits are similar to amino acids, but capable of forming two peptide bonds between adjacent subunits, thus eliminating rotational floppiness in the scaffold backbone. Another unexpected finding, says Tainer, is that peptide bonds, the backbone of the amino-acid chains, also interact with water molecules in the groovesas much as or even more than the most water-loving side chains. |
