Peretiatkovich, Georgii Ivanovich

    0.01 sec.
Peretiatkovich, Georgii Ivanovich

Born Nov. 26 (Dec. 8), 1840; died Aug. 7 (20), 1908, in Odessa. Russian historian.

A student of S. M. Solov’ev, Peretiatkovich graduated from Moscow University. He began teaching Russian history at the University of Novorossiia in Odessa in 1877, becoming a professor there in 1886.

Peretiatkovich’s chief works were devoted to the history of the Volga Region from the 15th to 18th centuries and to the economic development of the southeastern border areas of the Russian state in the 17th and 18th centuries. He collected extensive data on the history of the peoples of the Lower and Middle Volga regions. However, Peretiatkovich attributed the mutual influence and contacts between these peoples to the policy of russification and to their forced conversion to Christianity.
