Perm’, University of 

(full name A. M. Gorky University of Perm’), one of the oldest higher educational institutions in the Urals. Founded in 1916 as a branch of the University of Petrograd, it had faculties of physics and mathematics, history and philology, and law. It became an independent university in 1917, and its professors have included B. D. Grekov, S. P. Obnorskii, A. A. Zavarzin, A. G. Genkel’, A. A. Rikhter, V. N. Parin, A. A. Fridman, V. P. Pervushin, and P. I. Chistiakov. In 1931 several divisions of the university were developed into separate medical, pedagogical, and chemical-technology institutes in Perm’ and a veterinary institute in Troitsk. The university was named after A. M. Gorky in 1936.

The University of Perm’ has (1974) departments of mathematical mechanics, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, geography, economics, history, philology, and law and a department for the advanced training of specialists. It has evening and correspondence divisions and a division for preparing students to enter the university, as well as 50 subdepartments, an experimental laboratory of radiospectroscopy, a computer center, a natural-science institute, ten museums, two training and experimental farms, and a botanical garden. The library has more than 1 million volumes. In the 1973–74 academic year the university had more than 10,000 students and about 300 teachers, including 39 professors and doctors of sciences and 236 docents and candidates of sciences. It publishes Uchenye zapiski (since 1929). The University of Perm’ was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1966.
