The coastal region has sugar-cane plantations, and there is livestock raising for meat. The plateau region of the state is primarily pastureland used for raising livestock, chiefly cattle. Phosphorites are mined in Pernambuco, and there is food-processing, textile, chemical, cement, and paper industries.
