perpendicular recording A method of digital recording on a magnetic disk in which the bits are in a vertical arrangement instead of horizontal in order to take up less space. Also called "vertical recording," Toshiba and Seagate introduced perpendicular recording drives in the 2005-2006 time frame. Other drive vendors followed, and areal densities reached 400 gigabits per square inch by 2009. See superparamagnetic limit and areal density.
