perpendicular recordingA method of digital recording on a magnetic disk in which the bits are in a vertical arrangement instead of horizontal in order to take up less space. Also called "vertical recording," perpendicular recording is expected to materialize with areal densities exceeding 200 gigabits per square inch in the 2007-2008 time frame. By 2010, perpendicular densities are expected to exceed 500 Gb/sq. in.. See superparamagnetic limit and areal density.

Hitachi, earlier this month, demonstrated a perpendicular recording data density of 230 gigabits/square inch--twice that of today's density on longitudinal recording--which could result in a 20 gigabyte Microdrive in 2007. But even perpendicular recording will stave off the superparamagnetic limit only for a few years. The 200 Lean's flexible and modular design accommodates the production of multiple sizes of both aluminum and glass disks, as well as the growing number of thin-film process steps required by the adoption of advanced technologies such as perpendicular recording. |
