Name Origin: For the Perquimans River, which runs through it, named for the Indian tribe who once lived along its banks. Area (sq mi): 328.93 (land 247.17; water 81.76). Pop per sq mi: 48.90. Pop 2005: 12,080. State rank: 92. Pop change: 2000-20005 6.30%; 1990-2000 8.80%. Pop 2000: 11,368 (White 70.50%; Black or African American 28.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 0.90%).
