Name Origin: For Gen. John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing (1860-1948), an officer who served in Cuba, the Philippines, and Manchuria; commander in chief of the American Expeditionary Force (1917-18) during WWI, and U.S. army chief of staff (1921-24). Area (sq mi): 6067.55 (land 6036.56; water 30.99). Pop per sq mi: 1.10. Pop 2005: 6,360. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.00%; 1990-2000 54.40%.
