The Lockwood Plant will use pet coke as its primary fuel; pet coke (petroleum coke) is a refinery byproduct with properties similar to coal.
While JEA is realizing cost increases in natural gas and pet coke and is expected to see an increase in coal costs, their diversified fuel supply (80% coal/pet coke, 7% natural gas, 7% oil, and 6% other purchases) has historically provided JEA with stable energy costs even during volatile energy price periods.
In addition, the diversified fuel supply, particularly the benefits associated with low cost pet coke and an array of fuel transportation options, provide JEA with stable energy costs even during volatile energy price periods (reducing the need for historically higher cash reserves).
