Huchel, Peter

Born Apr. 3, 1903, in Lichterfelde. German poet.

Huchel emigrated from the German Democratic Republic to Italy in 1971. His work first appeared in 1924. While the fascists were in power, he published nothing. During World War II, Huchel served in the Wehrmacht and was a prisoner of war in the USSR. He was the artistic director of Berlin Radio from 1945 to 1948 and editor in chief of the magazine Sinn und Form from 1948 to 1962.

Huchel is a master of the pastoral and philosophic lyric. In the 1940’s and 1950’s some of his poems dealt with the socialist transformation of the world, but social and civic motifs subsequently became less typical of his verse. He is the author of the collections of lyric poems Roads, Roads (1963) and The Counted Days (1972). Huchel has received many literary prizes and belongs to a number of academies.
