Peter IV, king of Aragón

Peter IV (Peter the Ceremonious), 1319?–1387, king of Aragón and count of Barcelona (1336–87); son and successor of Alfonso IV. He supported Alfonso XI Alfonso XI, 1311–50, Spanish king of Castile and León (1312–50), son and successor of Ferdinand IV. His vigorous campaign against Granada provoked an invasion by the Moors from Morocco; they took Gibraltar in 1333.

Click the link for more information. of Castile at the battle of Tarifa (1340), recovered (1343–44) the kingdom of Majorca, and engaged in an indecisive naval war with Genoa and Pisa over possession of Sardinia. Though forced to confirm the privileges granted to the nobles by Alfonso III, Peter later (1348) defeated the troops of the nobles and withdrew their charter. In 1381 he assumed suzerainty over the duchy of Athens. His son, John I, succeeded him.

Spanish Pedro known as Peter the Ceremonious

(born Sept. 5, 1319, or Sept. 15, 1317, Balaguer, Catalonia—died Jan. 5, 1387, Barcelona) King of Aragon (1336–87). He took the Balearic Islands and Roussillon from Majorca (1343–44), defeated the Aragonese nobles (1348), and became duke of Athens and Neopatras (1380). He waged war against Castile (1356–66) but failed to gain any territory; after 1369 France favoured Castile over Aragon. Peter tried to maintain neutrality in the Hundred Years' War, and he quarreled with his heir, the future John I, who became the tool of French intrigues.
