Peterson, Aleksei Nikolaevich 

Born Mar. 9 (21), 1851, in the posad (suburb) of Kolpine, in what is now Leningrad Oblast; died Mar. 12, 1919, in Novgorod. Russian revolutionary. Son of a noncommissioned officer.

In the early 1870’s, Peterson was a metalworker in a cartridge factory in St. Petersburg. Beginning in 1871, he carried on revolutionary propaganda work among the workers. He was arrested in March 1874. After his release in 1876, he was active in various workers’ circles and became one of the organizers of the Northern Union of Russian Workers. Peterson was arrested once again in February 1878 and exiled to Arkhangel’sk Province; after escape and rearrest, he was exiled to Yakutia. In 1886 he returned from exile and carried on revolutionary propaganda work in various Russian cities. After 1900, when he joined the Socialist Revolutionaries, he was repeatedly imprisoned and exiled. From 1905 to 1908 he was a member of the St. Petersburg committee of the Socialist Revolutionary Party.
