Petit-Dutaillis, Charles 

Born Jan. 26, 1868, in Saint-Nazaire; died May 17, 1947, in Paris. French medieval historian. Member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (1930).

Petit-Dutaillis’s works on medieval France, England, and Holland centered primarily on political history; he attributed the development of the feudal monarchy to moral factors. In his study of the feudal monarchy in England from the tenth to 13th centuries, he traced in detail the conflict between the king and the barons, and viewed the Magna Carta as a triumph for reactionary forces. Petit-Dutaillis also published collections of documents on medieval history.
