Petr Aleksandrovich Manteifel

Manteifel’, Petr Aleksandrovich 

Born June 18 (30), 1882, in Moscow; died there Mar. 24,1960. Soviet biologist, expert on hunting, professor (1935). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1958).

Manteifel’ graduated from the Moscow Institute of Agriculture in 1910 (now the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy). From 1924 to 1936 he was deputy director of the Moscow Zoo, where he established a society of young biologists. Between 1948 and 1956 he was deputy director of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Commercial Hunting. He was head of a subdepartment at the Moscow Institute of Pelts and Furs (1936-55) and at the Moscow Veterinary Academy (1955-60). His principal works deal with the biology of commercial wild animals and birds, hunting fauna of the USSR, and fundamentals of biological technology. Manteifel’ wrote a number of popular books. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1941, he was awarded two orders and various medals.
