Zhivago, Petr Ivanovich 

Born Aug. 27 (Sept. 8), 1883, in Moscow, died there Oct. 30, 1948. Soviet cytologist.

In 1911, Zhivago graduated from Moscow University and began to work there. Beginning in 1943 he was head of the cardiology laboratory at the Institute of Cytology, Histology, and Embryology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works were studies on the delicate structure of the cell nucleus. He discovered the optical heterogeneity of interphase nuclei. He also investigated the structure and function of the nucleolus and showed that it played an important role in the metabolic processes of the cell. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and a medal.
