Petraşcu, Gheorghe
Born Dec. 5, 1872, in Tecuci; died May 1, 1949, in Bucharest. Rumanian painter. Petraşcu studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest from 1893 to 1898, the Academy of Arts in Munich in 1898, and the Académie Julian in Paris from 1898 to 1902. His works, executed in a free, postimpressionist manner, are marked by the simplicity of pictorial motifs, the dramatic expressiveness of impasto texture, and the contrasting combinations of subdued brown, ultramarine, and scarlet spots of color. Works by Petraşcu include The Copper Pot and Wild Flowers (both in the Museum of Art of the SSR in Bucharest), Landscape in Chioggia (1934, in the Zambaccian Museum in Bucharest), and Room in Tîrgovişte (1937, private collection in Bucharest).
