Petřkovice
an Upper Paleolithic settlement in Czechoslovakia on the left bank of the Odra River, near Ostrava. Excavations in 1952-53 by the Czech archaeologist B. Klima uncovered the remains of three permanent oval-shaped winter dwellings, each with two hearths. Each dwelling had an area of between 20 and 27 sq m. Coal extracted nearby was used, in addition to bones, for fuel. Two small figurines of female nudes made of iron ore (hematite) were also found. REFERENCESAbramova, Z. A.
