The jugular fossa, which is usually on the inferior surface of the petrous portion of the temporal bone, is a deep depression of variable size.
At the superior border of the thyroid cartilage, it ascends from the common carotid bifurcation superiorly to enter the carotid canal in the petrous portion of the temporal bone.
Fluid identified in the petrous portion or mastoid air cells, however, is a nonspecific finding and is often an incidental finding.
