Petrov, Aleksandr Mikhailovich 

Born 1882 in Kazan; died Aug. 24 (Sept. 6), 1905, in Sevastopol’. Bolshevik who led an uprising on the training ship Prut during the Revolution of 1905-07 in Russia.

The son of a minor official, Petrov was raised in the family of A. M. Stopani. He was expelled from the Gymnasium for his revolutionary tendencies and subsequently became a metalworker. Called up for the navy in 1903, he served as a machinist on the battleship Ekaterina II, where he organized a Social Democratic circle. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Social Democratic organization of the Black Sea Fleet, an organization subordinate to the Sevastopol’ committee of the RSDLP. He was transferred to the Prut on June 7 (20), 1905, because of his revolutionary agitation. On June 19 (July 2), he led an uprising on the ship and was elected chairman of the ship’s commission. After the uprising was suppressed on July 31 (August 13), Petrovskii was sentenced to death by a court-martial and shot along with three other sailors.
