a consonant formed by contracting the superior or inferior constrictor muscles at the back of the pharynx and drawing back the root of the tongue. Pharyngeal consonants may be stops or fricatives. They are characteristic of Arabic and some Dagestan languages; in addition, German has the voiceless pharyngeal fricative [ħ], and Ukrainian has the voiced pharyngeal fricative [ʕ].
