During the febrile attacks, an acute phase response develop, manifested by a marked increase in erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A, fibrinogen and leucocytes (1).
2) The acute phase response is characterised by a decrease in serum iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se), as well as an increase in serum copper (Cu).
In formalin-induced orofacial pain, the first phase response (0-5 min) corresponds to acute neurogenic pain sensitive to drugs that interact with opioid system and the second phase response (10-20 min) corresponds to inflammatory pain that can be inhibited by cyclooxygenase inhibitors.
