Phellodendron
a genus of dioecious trees of the family Rutaceae. The leaves are compound and odd-pinnate. The blossoms are small and greenish and are assembled in panicled inflorescence. The fruit is black and drupaceous. The blossoms produce good nectar; they are pollinated by bees. There are approximately ten species in Eastern Asia; the two of these in the USSR are P. sachalinense and P. amurense (Amur cork tree). The Amur cork tree is 25–30 m high and 70–80 cm in diameter. It grows in the Far East, in northeastern China, and Korea and is cultivated in various regions of the USSR and abroad. It forms a strong cork layer, which can be prepared for industrial use. The wood withstands rotting and is used for small articles, furniture, skis, plywood, and so on. A lemon-yellow dye and tannins are obtained from the phloem.
