Philippe Henri Girard

Girard, Philippe Henri 

Born Feb. 1, 1775, in Lourmarin, Provence; died Aug. 26, 1845, in Paris. French inventor. In 1810 he proposed a wet flax-spinning system. After an unsuccessful attempt to set up a flax-spinning industry in his native country, he went to Austria (1815) and then to Russia (1826). New Warsaw he founded a linen mill (about 1830). The city of Żyrardów in Poland is named after him.
