Philipse, Frederick (fĭl`ĭps), 1626–1702, merchant and landowner in colonial America, b. Holland. He went (1647) with his family to New Amsterdam, where he became wealthy as a merchant. He bought (1672) a large estate, Philipse Manor Philipsburg Manor, the northern family seat, at Upper Mills, North Tarrytown, on the Pocantico River. After the Revolution it went through several hands and numerous changes. It was partially restored in 1943, and the manor hall was reopened as a museum of Dutch colonial life.

His town house in New York City was confiscated by the New York state government in the American Revolution (see Morris, Roger Mary Philipse Morris, 1730–1825, inherited her wealth from her father, Frederick Philipse.
