photolysisBreakdown of molecules into smaller units via absorption of light. Flash photolysis, an experimental technique developed by Manfred Eigen, Ronald George Weyford Norrish, and George Porter, studies short-lived chemical intermediates formed in many photochemical reactions. An intense, brief flash of light splits molecules into short-lived fragments, which are analyzed by spectrophotometry in a second, less intense flash. How to thank TFD for its existence? West, Vacuum Ultraviolet Photojonization and Photodissociation of Molecules and Clusters, C. The energized oxygen arises by photodissociation, a process whereby the sun's energy breaks up high-altitude ozone and other oxygenated molecules, Houston says. They are also studying the use of laser excitation during molecular beam experiments to promote the removal of one or more specific atoms from larger molecules--a selective type of photodissociation. |
