phytic acid [′fīd·ik ′as·əd] (organic chemistry) C6H6[OPO(OH)2]6An acid found in seeds of plants as the insoluble calcium magnesium salt (phytin); derived from corn steep liquor; inhibits calcium absorption in intestine; used to treat hard water, to remove iron and copper from wines, and to inactivate trace-metal contaminants in animal and vegetable oils. Dietary protein, especially animal protein, is believed to reduce the effect of phytic acid on zinc absorption. The new drink, which contains citric acid, malic acid, L-cystine, phytic acid and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), helps eliminate poisonous metals from the body while promoting adequate hydration. Soybean critics counter that soy may in fact lead to osteoporosis because soy contains phytic acid (phytates), which prevents the absorption of certain minerals, including zinc, calcium and magnesium. |
