Pi Sheng
Chinese artisan who initiated book printing with movable letters. Pi Sheng’s invention dates from 1041–48. Printing elements (hieroglyphs) of baked clay were fixed in iron typesetting forms by means of a resinous mixture that hardened upon cooling.
