Piazzetta, Giovanni Batista (jōvän`nē bätēs`tä pēätsĕt`tä), 1682–1754, Italian painter. An exponent of the Venetian school, Piazzetta combined soft colors with a dramatic, chiaroscuro technique reminiscent of Caravaggio Caravaggio, Michelangelo Merisi da or Amerigi da Caravaggio , 1571–1610, Italian painter. His surname, Caravaggio, came from his birthplace.
