Picheta, Vladimir Ivanovich 

Born Oct. 9 (21), 1878, in Poltava; died June 23, 1947, in Moscow. Soviet historian. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946) and the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (1928).

Picheta graduated from the historical and philological faculty of Moscow University in 1901. He conducted research and taught in the Ukraine and, from 1905, in Moscow. From 1921 to 1929 he was rector of the University of Byelorussia. From the end of the 1930’s he worked at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and at Moscow State University. In 1946 he became deputy director of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His major works dealt with the socioeconomic and cultural history of Russia, Byelorussia, Lithuania, the Ukraine, and Poland.
