On central-western border of AL, west of Tuscaloosa; organized Dec 19, 1820 from Tuscaloosa County. Name Origin: Probably for Gen. Andrew Pickens (1739-1817), Revolutionary War hero, and U.S. representative from SC (1793-95). Others claim Israel Pickens, GA governor (1821-25).
