Pictou

Pictou (pĭk`t, pĭkt`), town (1991 pop. 4,134), N N.S., Canada, on Pictou Harbour, an inlet of Northumberland Strait. It is a lobster-fishing port and the terminal of a ferry to Prince Edward Island. It has lumbering and canning industries, and there are coal mines in the area. Pictou was settled (1763) by a group of colonists from Philadelphia and later received many settlers from the Scottish Highlands.
