Pierce, John Robinson (1910– ) electrical engineer; born in Des Moines, Iowa. Pierce worked in the Bell Telephone Laboratories (1936–71), subsequently becoming professor at the California Institute of Technology. In the 1950s he was one of the first to see the possibilities of satellite communication and played a role in the research that resulted in the launch of Echo (1960) and Telstar (1962).
