The opera was written in 1876 to poke fun at an outdated eighteenth century aristocracy and is based on the stage comedy of the same name by Pierre Beaumarchais.
The opera is based on a 1784 play by Pierre Beaumarchais that was a sequel to his earlier play, `The Barber of Seville.
