Bayard, Pierre Terrail, seigneur de (bā`ərd; pyĕr tĕrī`yə sānyör` də bäyär`), c.1474–1524, French military hero, called le chevalier sans peur et sans reproche [the knight without fear or reproach]. He exhibited bravery and genius as a commander in all the important battles of the Italian Wars Italian Wars, 1494–1559, series of regional wars brought on by the efforts of the great European powers to control the small independent states of Italy.
