Piip, Boris Ivanovich 

Born Oct. 24 (Nov. 6), 1906, in St. Petersburg; died Mar. 10, 1966, in Petropavlovsk-Kamchat-skii. Soviet volcanologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958). Member of the CPSU from 1945.

After graduating from the Leningrad Institute of Mines in 1931, Piip was an assistant and then a docent in the department of petrography at the institute until 1938. In the period beginning in 1940 he was on the staff of various volcanological institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He became director of the academy’s Institute of Volcanology in 1963. His principal works were The Thermal Springs of Kamchatka (1937) and Kliuchevskaia Sopka and Its Eruptions in 1944-1945 and in the Past (1956). These studies deal with the dynamics, physics, and chemistry of eruptions and the origin of thermal waters.

In 1963, Piip became vice-president of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star and various medals.
