Pike, Zebulon (Montgomery) (1779–1813) soldier, explorer; born in Lamberton, N.J. As an army officer, he led several parties of western exploration, including a trip to the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red Rivers (1806–07) during which he approached the Colorado peak that bears his name. Pike was killed leading the successful American assault on British forces at York (now Toronto), Ontario, on April 27, 1813.
