Pilcomayo River

Pilcomayo River

River, south-central South America. The chief western tributary of the Paraguay River, it rises in the eastern Andes Mountains in west-central Bolivia. It flows southeast through the Gran Chaco of Paraguay to join the Paraguay River opposite Asunción, after about 1,000 mi (1,600 km). It forms part of the border between Argentina and Paraguay.

AUTHOR NOTE: Due to climatic changes, the Pilcomayo River is now host to the pirana, the meateating fish found mostly in the Amazon Basin.
