pillarbox |
Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.01 sec. |
pillarboxThe display of a standard TV image on a wide screen. For example, to show a standard TV program with a 4:3 aspect ratio on a high definition TV set with a 16:9 aspect ratio, black bars are displayed at the left and right sides to make up for the shorter width of the 4:3 frame. Contrast with letterbox. See HDTV display modes.

With the Pace DC-550 HD, different SD and HD program content is automatically scaled and scan rates changed to ensure the user sees a picture the way they want to watch it, avoiding black bars around the picture (letterbox and pillarbox bars) that are evident with some set-tops on the market today. Gateways available to operators so far have only accommodated an unsecured analog 1080i signal output, which can cause a subscriber's television to display some content with both letterbox and pillarbox bars (black bars around picture). |
