Pilot Knob State Park Location: 4 miles east of Forest City, off IA 9. Facilities: 60 campsites (@di; 48 with electrical hookups) with modern shower and restroom facilities, playground, picnic areas, open picnic shelters (é), hiking and equestrian trails, open air amphitheater, warming house. Activities: Camping, lake fishing, hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling. Pilot Knob Recreation Area, just north of the park, is available for public hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, and other activities. Special Features: Pilot Knob is the second highest point in Iowa. In earlier times it served as a guide for pioneers traveling west, which is how it got its name. Today, an observation tower atop the knob affords visitors a panoramic view of the surrounding farmland. Hidden within the park is Dead Man's Lake, a four-acre floating sphagnum bog, the only one of its kind in Iowa.
