On south-central border of AZ; original county; organized Dec 15, 1864 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Pima Indian tribe, who inhabited the Gila and Salt River valleys of AZ. Pima was the name given the tribe by the Spanish; it means 'no' or 'I don't know,' the response the Spanish received to their questions and mistook for the tribe's name.
